Organic Material Study - Lettuce and Kale

Here I experimented with embedding as well as imprinting organic material: lettuce and kale. Unlike other textured materials which do not degrade or decay over (a short) period of time, I was intrigued by a material that could be "stuck" in the concrete but not permanently because it would inevitably decompose out.

Test 6 - Trays and Structure

As part of our group research, I tested different ways to incorporate structure into varying thickness of concrete. The ultimate goal is to be able to hang the concrete using the wire or mesh.

Both wire and mesh were pretty successful. They support the concrete well.

Salt Study - Take II and III

Experimenting with different types of salt and applying variety of pressures to try to mimic a salt-etching procedure and to see te degree of texturing that occurs.

The rough texture comes from the coarse salt.

Test 4 - Air Pack 2

I poured a little rockite first to seal the bottom of the mold to prevent leaks. Then, in a second pour, I filled up the rest of the mold.
It came out in one piece, and it stands on its own.

QuaDror

Link to the QuaDror article and video.
Next time I'll make it with a little more love and a lot less quikrete.
Orange study take II...this time the orange peels are placed on the top rather than bottom of the form.

week02

DIY!

Test 3 - Air Pack 1

I needed to make the air pack water tight. I used bags and tape.

All the concrete sank to the bottom of the form. Must figure out how to keep it in the middle....

Test 2 - Acrylic

I inserted acrylic pieces of different sizes by wedging them between the formwork.
When I poured the concrete, it flowed under and over the pieces to fill the 2x4x4 box.

Final was a bit crumbly. I may have left it in the mold for too long. The mixture may have also been too watery,
